No Till vs. No Tools - is that the Issue?

Water & Soil Reacting to Metals
9 Jan 2009

No Till vs. No Tools - what is the issue?  It may be the material.

Reading the positive effects of no till gardening I recalled the work of Viktor Schauberger.  He was a pioneering ecologist and forester in Austria.  He became suspicious when observing the productivity of the fields in various parts of Austria.  The difference was the copper vs. iron tools used in working the fields.

In the 1940’s agricultural trials were carried out.  Different sections of the same field were ploughed in alternative areas using two tools made of the different materials.  One plough was iron and the other was copper plated.

Results: The areas ploughed with the copper-plated tool produced a yield of various crops from 17 to 35 percent.  There was also a noted improvement in quality.

He attributed this to the iron oxidizing into rust, which in turn caused the soil to dry out.

I refer you to “Living Water” by Olof Alexandersson.  On page 102 he goes into more detail on this principle.

I am not sure if more research has been on this topic yet maybe the no till farming/gardening is related to this issue in a similar way.  Maybe no till is successful because no iron tools are used.

Viktor also promoted the use of wooden tools as well.  Today it is often the tool of choice by the Hopi and Navajo as reported to me by farmers in Woodruff AZ.

Viktor did most of his work with water and has written several books.  Some are not easy to find.  I’ve read them all.  They present a challenging read with lots of pieces of wisdom, observations and discoveries.  He could really make water dance.

I, from my view of the valley and miles of homes, continue to explore water.  I find it magical and the messenger for all life.

PS.  I use the spelling from his writings.

PSS. I have been a subscriber and advertiser in Acres USA for ten plus years.  I tell others about Acres and tell them; “it is how you can stay in touch with your food and its sources”.
